Hometown: Chicago, IL

Legal Area of Interest: I am interested in all things public interest law! I plan to continue gaining experience in areas such as immigration, environmental, housing, and labor law.

What has been one of your most memorable classes at Arizona Law?

My most memorable class was Property Law with Professor Pidot. I had no idea what we would be learning prior to starting the class but it ended up being one of the most interesting classes I have taken. It exposed me to an area of law I otherwise would have probably written off but am now considering pursuing. It was a great reminder to keep an open mind when choosing and taking classes.

What is one of your favorite experiences while at Arizona Law?

One of my favorite experiences at Arizona Law is attending the speaker series on campus hosted by different student organizations during the lunch hour. I have learned so much about different areas of law from practitioners. These series gave me the opportunity to meet the speakers and ask questions about their practice. I highly recommend attending as many on-campus events as possible.

What advice do you have for incoming 1L's?

My advice is to get involved! There are so many opportunities at the law school for you to take advantage of and I have yet to regret attending an event at the law school. Different clubs and organizations bring in a variety of guest speakers you can learn from and host fun events such as open mic night. I went to every event that I could last year and believe doing so is what made my 1L experience so great.

Name a favorite a place in Tucson visitors should go to. Could be restaurant/coffee shop/activity etc.

Our family loves Eegee’s—especially the monthly flavors (Watermelon is a favorite!). We enjoy trying new places to eat like KOTU Korean BBQ, The Parish, and Time Market for pizza. Outside of food, we enjoy hiking local trails, visiting the zoo with our son, and spending time at the Tucson Museum of Art.

What Clubs/Organizations are you involved in outside of class?

I’m President of the Native and Indigenous Law Students Association (NILSA) and a member of National NALSA. These organizations have allowed me to build community, support fellow Native students, and help amplify Indigenous legal perspectives on campus and beyond.

Name a favorite a place in Tucson visitors should go to. Could be restaurant/coffee shop/activity etc.

My favorite place to take people visiting Tucson is the Sonoran Desert Museum. It is an outdoor museum that feels closer to a wildlife sanctuary. If you love the outdoors, its a great way to learn more about the Sonoran Desert and the wildlife in and around Tucson. Also there is a student discount!

Why did you choose Arizona Law?

I chose Arizona Law because of its academic rigor, small class sizes, affordability, and welcoming culture.

Legal Area of Interest: I am interested in criminal law and immigration law. Specifically, I would love to work for an immigration firm handling cases involving previous criminal offenses.

What advice do you have for incoming 1L's?

Don't get nervous about the academics of it all. One of the most important parts of law school is figuring out what area of law you are passionate about. The connections you will make and the experiences you will have are so much more valuable than any gpa could ever be! That being said, do try your best! You will never regret it.

What has been one of your most memorable classes at Arizona Law?

My immigration professor allowed me to watch an asylum hearing just a few weeks after we had covered that material in class. At the hearing, the judge granted the client asylum, and it was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I loved seeing the law in practice, especially since it saved this person's life.

What has been one of your most memorable classes at Arizona Law?

Why did you choose Arizona Law?

I chose Arizona Law because of the great scholarship I received. Law school is expensive, and having a scholarship to help minimize debt upon graduation was extremely important to me.

Legal Area of Interest: I'm really interested in public interest law, whether that be working with survivors of domestic violence, working for the government, or working in politics.

What is one thing every student should experience at Arizona Law?

Every student should get to know the other small sections! I have the best small section and I also made friends with a lot of people in other small sections. Not only will this help you learn about other courses and professors, but it will also help you find more support, study tactics/buddies, and friends!

What is one of your favorite experiences while at Arizona Law? What advice do you have for incoming 1L's?

Law school can come with a steep learning curve - be kind to yourself, remember that you are enough, and know that it will get easier! Do the best *you* can do and don't worry too much about what everyone else is doing.

Legal Area of Interest: Family law & litigation - I'm still exploring different areas of law. You never know what you may be interested in unless you give it a try!

What is one thing every student should experience at Arizona Law?

I really enjoyed participating in the Summer On-Campus Interview Program that happens early in the spring semester. Having the interview practice under my belt helped me feel more confident in talking about myself and my law school experience.

Why did you choose Arizona Law?

I chose Arizona Law because of the tight-knit community it fosters between current students, staff & faculty, recent alumni, and even alumni from many years ago. I feel like there is an implicit bond between Arizona Law graduates that is incredibly supportive and positive. I love being a part of it!

Carissa Patton ’26

Hometown: Murphy, TX

Legal Area of Interest: Intellectual Property

What has been one of your most memorable classes at Arizona Law?

My most memorable class was Criminal Procedure with Professor Kreag. His vast knowledge and experience made the content come to life, he brought clarity to any questions that were asked of him, and he never failed to make the entire class laugh right when we needed it. This class was my first taste of criminal law, so it also prompted a lot of interesting conversations with family members in law enforcement about things I had never thought of before, so I really enjoyed that as well.

Why did you choose Arizona Law?

I chose Arizona Law because of the opportunities to learn about a vast range of law and technologies. With a background in computer engineering, I wanted to pursue an area of law that intersected technology. Arizona’s TechLaw Fellowship and faculty and staff committed to helping students learn more about how law is impacted by technology made it the easy choice for me!

Everyone should experience Trivia Night! It's a great way each semester to get together with the entire law school and forget about school for an evening.

What is one of your favorite experiences while at Arizona Law?

I like to study together with my friends in the Collaborative Space on the bottom floor of the library. Generally, studying with others is great because talking about the material together helps each of you understand it deeper than you would if you were studying alone.

I'm the current Vice President of the South Asian Law Student Association and the Treasurer of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. Also, I play pickleball and tennis with other students on the weekend for fun!

What has been one of your most memorable classes at Arizona Law?

Legal Research, Analysis, and Communications (LRAC) has been the most memorable class because it challenges everyone differently. For instance, writing my first legal memorandum felt almost impossible because legal writing was like a new language. However, I only felt comfortable with legal writing after I made mistakes that I could improve on. LRAC helped me grow significantly as a writer.

Legal Area of Interest: I am mainly interested in Immigration Law. Nonetheless, I am also interested in other legal areas such as criminal and employment.

What is one thing every student should experience at Arizona Law?

Everyone should experience being a volunteer or observer for the Basic or Advanced Trial Advocacy Class. Observing other Arizona Law 2Ls and 3Ls argue a case in front of a real judge is so intriguing. It is also special to see your peers in action as they demonstrate their legal knowledge, creativity, and presence in a courtroom.

What Clubs/Organizations are you involved in outside of class?

Outside of class I am the President of the Latine Law Student Association, Vice President of the Student Bar Association, and on the executive board of the Immigration Law Student Association.

What is one of your favorite experiences while at Arizona Law?

I love the times I get to hang out with my peers in between classes. There's no stronger bond in law school than those in the trenches with you and can be genuinely sympathetic/understanding of the amount of stress you go through; but at the same time, we all love it! It's true that you make lasting friendships with those you meet in law school.

What is one thing every student should experience at Arizona Law?

I think one thing every student should experience at Arizona Law is Trivia Night. It a fun night where students from each year get together to enjoy some trivia and compete against each other! It's a great way to get to know students from other years and take some time away from studying!

Justin Terrill

Justin Terrill ’27

Hometown: Oxnard, CA

Legal Area of Interest: Since beginning law school I found myself being more drawn to advocacy and trial litigation. Though litigation is broad, I find myself more specifically interested in civil and business litigation with an emphasis in international law.

What has been one of your most memorable classes at Arizona Law?

International Business Transactions with Gantz & Dubovec was a real eye-opener. I came into law school with an interest in international trade law and everything in that class really opened my eyes to how broad and vast the topic actually is. Similarly, having a class that is focused on real-world application and client representation really helped me picture my career post-school.

Why did you choose Arizona Law?

I chose Arizona law because of the tight-knit community it promised. Unlike other law schools that I toured, UofA was the best balance between good size and great resources. Moreover, everyone at Arizona law actually looks like they want to be there. There is such a lively, upbeat atmosphere for a law school at the UofA that no other school I saw could compete with.

Diana Vega German ’26

Hometown: Tucson, AZ

Legal Area of Interest: I am interested in many legal areas. However, the legal areas that most interest me include Immigration, Family and Juvenile, Criminal, and Public Interest Law. What I enjoy most is helping others, and the goal is to work in an area that will allow me to do so.

What advice do you have for incoming 1Ls?

A great piece of advice I can give incoming 1Ls is to relax and enjoy the new experience. Seize any and every opportunity law school has to offer that interests you. You may enjoy a topic you had never heard of or meet legal community members who open you up to new knowledge and opportunities. There is more to do than simply trying to get a good grade in class. Sometimes, all the other opportunities will teach you the most about who you are as a student, person, and legal advocate.

What is one of your favorite experiences while at Arizona Law?

One of my favorite experiences while at Arizona Law was the networking opportunities I had. Fantastic opportunities throughout the year allowed us to meet judges and attorneys and spend more time one-on-one with our professors, allowing us to learn more about the legal profession and ourselves. Some highlights were listening to live oral arguments and participating in the Legal Writing and Research Course (LRAC) throughout my 1L year. There is no better feeling than overcoming my nerves about being in the LRAC program and surprising myself with writing skills I did not know I had. Our writing professors are excellent and take out the best in each and every one of their students.

Hometown: Fort Collins, CO

Legal Area of Interest: While my areas of interest seem to change with every class I take, I currently want to pursue criminal or family law.

What advice do you have for incoming 1Ls?

My advice is twofold. First, focus on relationships with your fellow students. This is a unique and challenging adventure that most have never experienced, so lean on those who have. Second, go to office hours.

Why did you choose Arizona Law?

I chose Arizona Law because it opens the most doors for my future career. The environment is wonderful, and because of the small class sizes, you get to know professors and students more deeply.

Tyler Wilhelm ’26

Hometown: Scottsdale, AZ

Legal Area of Interest: I'm still open to several areas of the law, but I'm most interested in business litigation and international law.

What advice do you have for incoming 1Ls?

Get to know everyone in your small section! And, if you're small section tends to be paired up with another small section, get to know them as well! I'm so grateful for my combined small section - they're some of my best friends and being alongside them day in and day out made navigating 1L so much better!

What is one of your favorite experiences while at Arizona Law?

I had the opportunity to meet 1-on-1 with our university's Athletic Director, Desireé Reed-Francois. She was visiting the law school, and the CDO offered to set up a 1-on-1 meeting with her while she'd be in town. I said yes, and a week later I'm sitting in LRAC, only to see the news break that she was being hired as our school's next AD! The meeting was incredible and she even invited me to her introductory press conference at the stadium the following morning! I sat alongside Dean Miller, Dean Kreag, and Dean JC - definitely an experience I'll never forget!
